Bone and Joint Decade
BONE AND JOINT DECADE 2000-2010
The GELITA Health Initiative is a global partner of the "Bone and Joint Decade 2000 – 2010"

The "Bone and Joint Decade" was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) in order to improve the overall care and treatment of patients suffering from bone and joint diseases.

Throughout the world, hundreds of millions of people are currently suffering from diseases affecting the musculoskeletal systems, resulting in enormous costs to society in general and health care in particular. In addition, the increase in elderly populations in industrial societies yields an increase of these diseases. Kofi Annan, General Secretary of the UN, has given his support to the project, as have numerous national Health Ministries.

What are the goals of the "Bone and Joint Decade"?

  • To promote health-oriented behavior in adults, adolescents and children.
  • To implement proven prevention, diagnosis, therapy, and rehabilitation strategies.
  • To reduce the costs involved in treating diseases of the musculoskeletal systems.
  • To promote patient-oriented research into these specific diseases.
To adapt research investment and training to reflect the incidence of these diseases.

Some 750 scientific societies, government representatives, patient organizations, and industrial partners are involved in the project.

Since the beginning of 2004, the GELITA Group has been a partner in the "Bone and Joint Decade" project. Within the scope of this cooperation, GELITA participates in regular project roundtable meetings and is thus able to orient its collagen hydrolysate research to the requirements of worldwide research on osteoarthritis to the benefit of all.

Information on this initiative is available from the Secretariat of the Bone and Joint Decade, Department of Orthopedics at the University Hospital of Lund, Sweden.
